著者简介

阎云翔，美国加州大学洛杉矶分校中国研究中心主任、文化人类学教授。阎云翔先生系著名学者张光直的学生，早年著作有《礼物的流动》，最近，他的英文专著《私人生活的变革：一个中国村庄里的爱情、家庭与亲密关系：1949～1999》获得美国著名的历史学学术著作奖-列文森奖。这是为纪念美国著名汉学家列文森而设立的，每年只颁发给两本亚洲研究专著的作者。阎云翔先生是第一位获此殊荣的华裔学者。

basically he is arguing that the individualization in China is state-initiated rather than a byproduct of market development. the local understanding of individualism is more like egotism instead of the values of freedom, privacy, etc. he also took personal desires, manipulation, pursuit for happiness as the expression of agency.
