传统，义务在现代日本社会中，对现代日本年轻人的身份建构中依然起着非常重要的作用。self 与traditional在identity中似乎tradition占有更大的比重。这让在美国文化中成长的作者感到不结。因为日本人立世的基础是义务。这在多本关于日本的民族志中都有体现。《邻里东京》中也提到了社区中有一位人保留着大家的送礼来往，“来往”体现的一种义务缔结。而义务往来最密切的地方是家与社区。因此即使是现代日本，传统的烙印也无比深刻。
