知识考古学中所使用的档案，已经不是单纯意义上的“文档”（document），而成为一种历史事件的见证，作为“纪念碑”（monument）而呈现出来。通过档案，在话语实践层面上找到那些曾经突现的功能性陈述，以重构话语实践的发生。此外，要注意从archaeology到genealogy的转变。在这里，福柯的权力谱系学充分继承了尼采的道德谱系学：拒斥起源、拒斥总体的线性历史、重构历史的知识生产。“谱系”或“系谱”一词来代表冷僻知识和局部记忆的结合。谱系学的作用就是要关注局部的、非连续性的、被取消资格的、非法的知识，以此对抗整体统一的理论。谱系学就是要取消知识的等级制度，突出知识生产的偶发性，将那些处于边缘、被压迫状态的非法知识解救出来，以获得与处于中心的强势知识一样的合法地位。
