Giving aid is not enough, we must ensure that it reaches the people who need it most and the only way to make this happens is through accountability and by learning from past experiences. Without claiming to have all the answers, William Easterly chastises the complacent and patronising attitude of the West that attempts to impose solutions from above. In this book, which is by turns angry, moving, irreverent but always rigorous, he calls on each and everyone of us to take responsibility, whether donors, aid workers or ordinary citizens, so that more aid reaches the people it is supposed to help, the mother who cannot feed her children, the little girl who has to collect firewood rather than go to school, the father who cannot work because he has been crippled by war.

作者用統計證據花式證僞Jeffrey Sachs的aid ends poverty理論，但用具體story back his own theory，總之讀到現在沒有覺得searcher theory有在事實上而非直覺上使我非常信服的地方。之後關於建立市場和民主的論述也是cliche。這本書的定位應該是西方白人的宏觀經濟政治科普書，隨意翻翻就好。

絕對的強者麵對絕對的弱者，無法産生同理心或認同感的情況下，僅用金錢等物質形式施捨援助釋放同情心，不過是用居高臨下的憐憫以滿足自己的道德優越感罷瞭；甚至更陰暗的是讓弱者依附於他們而存在，從而好奪取他們身後豐富的自然資源。這樣不僅不會幫助弱者真正成長被他們感激，反而會被弱者的自卑感和嫉妒心反噬發展成仇恨。授人以魚不如授人以漁，這點上中國人以華為為代錶的中國企業更聰明。
