William Schaefer teaches East Asian photography and modern Chinese literature and visual culture at the University of Rochester. His book, Shadow Modernism: Photography, Writing, and Space in Shanghai, 1925-1937, is under contract with Duke University Press, and he is currently at work on a new book project, Photograph Ecologies: Nature, Culture, and Contemporary Photography in China, Japan, and the West, portions of which appear in Representations and are forthcoming in ASAP/Journal.
