全书采用建筑领域的后现代模型，一言以蔽之就是“the presence of the past”，这种模型下认为后现代小说和法国新新小说，意大利的neoavanguardia，美国的surfiction都是不同的，它们都比后现代小说激进，作者在书中主要探讨的后现代小说是Historiographic metafiction。认为后现代既不是完全积极正面的过分理想化乌托邦也不是完全消极的鲍德里亚式超现实拟像世界。后现代质疑的同时并不完全摒弃，而是肯定质疑对象的存在。各种废话和重复，不过还算是指出了一些容易被忽视但其实又能引起共识的问题，如后现代理论家的观点往往建立在不算全面的实践和作品分析基础上，Hutcheon逐条反驳了伊格尔顿的观点作为例子；不过其实例子的选用受观点影响，哈钦也不例外
