費正清寫瞭一句概括中國曆史最深刻的話：Never have so few ruled for so long over so many. 整本書對古代史的敘述比較簡單粗略，最精彩的是清末明初的章節，49年以後的敘述更多，缺少精彩的分析。Goldmann添加的兩章長篇大段敘述，比較囉嗦，沒有什麼特彆齣彩的內容，像是高鶚在續《紅樓夢》。

本书是费正清生前完成的最后一部著作，这本书是在他去世之前的两天最后定稿的。1991年9月12号上午费正清把书稿送给了哈佛大学出版社，下午他的心脏病就复发了，两天以后去世，所以《中国新史》这本书就成了他整个学术生命当中的最后一部著作，也是凝聚他心血的最后一部著作。这...
