As the novel follows the protagonist, Patrice Mersault, to his victim's house -- and then, fleeing, in a journey that takes him through stages of exile, hedonism, privation, and death -it gives us a glimpse into the imagination of one of the great writers of the twentieth century. 卡繆的《異鄉人》大概是從這本書衍生而來的吧，不太相同的劇情卻有著韆絲萬縷的聯係，Mersault 和 Meursault不隻是名字相似，一貫樣的情感疏離卻又追尋探索著生命意義（而殺瞭人），書中的女人也不由讓人想到L’estranger 裏的Maria。有機會去阿爾及利亞阿爾及爾，一定住一間山上的房子，“house above the world”, 麵朝大海。
