以ecology视角切入，不难发现小说中human&non-human agencies的频繁误认(animalizing&anthropomorphic metaphors)。自然更具备affective power，以暴雨后林地的颓败构成对Giles重病去世的预叙。两种生态意义上（interconnectedness）的人际模式——reciprocal&hierarchical，前者以Marty和Giles为代表(true complement in the other sex, corollary)，后者则具体化为Grace在patriarchal/erotic/legislative coercion间的徒然挣扎。哈代追问的或许仍是命运、时间、社会结构控制下个体自主权的限度问题。
