地下者反駁達爾文主義和西方哲學中的決定論，認為科學公式不能預測人的自由意誌，為瞭證明自由的存在，人不惜做齣對自己有害的選擇。然而他本人被束縛在尷尬的社交場閤，自知無法脫離。這也恰恰證明，叛逆是另一種形式的不自由。書中真正達到自由的或許是妓女Liza。在詆毀麵前，她選擇共情而不是反駁；與卑鄙的地下者赤誠相見時，她擁抱瞭對方。

He knows my greatest fears, deepest desires, most trivial thoughts, dirty pleasures and vile behaviours like my dearest friend. I despise him for discovering too many things that I am overly conscious and guilty of; I love him for making me feel like home. This book had me downright naked, exposed, with nowhere to hide — not even the underground.
