2018.3.18 春假重看了the Remains of the Day，和年轻时读的感受完全不一样… 年轻的时候更感兴趣里面暗涌的政治、二战、民主。这次却看到了职业，选择，life calling，时代变迁与做人dignity… 很多人对职业的投入，也是赌上了自己的一生，而Stevens 特别悲壮的地方是他的主人亲纳粹，看不起庶民，他这一生似乎全部赌错。但是他能有别的选择吗？不一样的职业选择，这一生就更加fulfilling吗？Ms Kenten和他真的在一起会幸福吗？… 人的一生，是选择，还是天定？刚来美国时，觉得这里很夸张，孩子那么小就让他们读“名著“，他们能看懂吗？现在才意识到名著的魅力就在于仁者见山，智者见水，年轻人见热血，年长者见沧桑。什么年龄读都刚刚好。

文笔优雅、内敛、平静，作者身为日裔却写出了比莎士比亚更为凝练沉稳的英语。当主人公管家在第一天的大英帝国小清新乡村旅行结束后躺在床上心算什么是“（职业的）尊严”，我从心底由衷地发出了一声“艹”。

One is too restrained, the other is too sensitive. That's how their story came to an end without reaching expectation for both of them. The sorrow inside is restrained as Mr Stevens, lurking everywhere yet never gives you the chance to pour it out. I know pretty well how that happened. That's how life really is.

这个文字功力可太带劲儿了。

"Whenever I thought of leaving, I just saw myself going out there and finding nobody who knew or cared about me. There, that's all my high principles amount to. I feel so ashamed of myself. But I just couldn't leave, Mr. Stevens. I just couldn't bring myself to leave."

《长日留痕》的作者石黑一雄1954年生于日本长崎，5岁随父前往英国定居。这本长篇小说1988年出版，1989年获英国小说布克奖。如果不知道作者背景的话，会认为这是一本再地道不过的“英国小说”，继承了奥斯汀那一路的英国小说传统，绵里藏针的聪明，温柔敦厚的节制，还有风景，...  

恕我直言：别在这本书里读出爱情！ 肯顿小姐不过是另一种可能性的化身。不管她怎样暗示，她都没有选择史蒂文斯。在自己的婚姻里她游移不定，有逃离的打算并且数次出走，可没有逃离的决心；更何况，完全没有放弃的必要。肯顿小姐是和史蒂文斯一样情感内敛的人，习惯在回忆里回忆...  

有时明明发生了很多事，你认为自己会改变，但其实你一如从前；有时虽然生活很平淡地过着，你却再也不是从前的你了。 就像《情书》里的情节，生活中的一点发现，重新浮现的一点回忆，人们学会了与过去握手言和，把被过去牵拌的自己留在山谷中的一声声”你好吗“之中，重...

虽然早有听说石黑一雄，但身边朋友对他的评价都一般，今年诺奖之后我才开始读，看了《小夜曲》、《远山淡影》、《长日留痕》、《浮世画家》。没有太细看，有些是听完的，对这几本做一个大致的印象总结。 1 《长日留痕》获1989年布克奖，是比较没有争议的一部好小说。东方人总试...
