Jürgen Habermas is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt and Professor of Philosophy at Northwestern University. He was recently awarded the 2004 Kyoto Prize for Arts and Philosophy by the Inamori Foundation. The Kyoto Prize is an international award to honor those who have contributed significantly to the scientific, cultural, and spiritual betterment of mankind.

Well, never mind whether you agree with him or not. What is he trying to say? What is his "public sphere" anywhere? Is it a tea house or a restaurant? Is it something else? How did he qualify such a thing? How are people supposed to behave in such a thing? What is the most important quality a person needs to possess in order to perform in it?

将公共领域和市民社会截然分开，直接源于中世纪以来权力结构和公私关系的变迁、权力主体的变化和公共权力在社会面前呈现的面相。经济交换与消费向来是“私域”，也将市民社会定位于此（这和很多意见相左），王权（其实还有教廷权力）可谓公共权力，但封建领主族长和庄园主在许多事务上的权力和纽带、大众的交往，逐渐形成介乎两者之间公共领域，如政治意见发表（领主与自治者对王权的抗拒），文化产品交换市场（市镇），话语表达空间（沙龙等，再次对语言结构与沟通可能性敏感）。重新解读许多欧美政治与社会理论，将理想公共领域定位在17-18世纪封建王朝逐步衰落而现代国家尚未成熟之际，此后基本是国家介入公域整合意见和自我合法化权力的过程。有种暧昧乌托邦情结，似希望现代社会中大众能重新为理性所充满而充分沟通交往，柔性抗拒国家规训。
