Thomas Mann depicted artists and intellects as emotionally crippled cowards, mortally decayed crooks, or self-destructive crowns. Their knowledge wouldn't lead to wisdom and their analysis could be only toys, for they were unable to feel simply and honestly, or to blend in the world of solid, upright ordinary people. There may be some truth in it.
