去年夏天在東京偶然購得此書，好幾次讀瞭幾頁覺得太沉悶又放下瞭。一直到最近重新拿起，讀到Stevens憶起父親意外摔倒後獨自在傍晚徘徊的那幕情景，突然就被這種剋製內斂卻充滿力量的文筆所擊中，一口氣讀完，悵然若失良久。Stevens反復談論的’diginity’，和Lord Darlington在宴會上反駁美國人所謂的amateurism時所說的’honor’隱隱呼應，主僕的命運也似乎因為對這種舊帝國榮耀近乎天真的堅持而遙相印照。大時代的巨輪碾過每個人，在長日將盡、天光消散時，纔恍然看到那些錯誤的抉擇和虛度的人生時光，在心口或深或淡的留痕。
